Firewood Direct based in Ashford Kent, have a business aim to provide quality kiln dried logs to our customers, with the added benefit of educating our clients to the enormous benefits to them and for the environment. Burning logs is environmentally friendly as it is carbon neutral and net carbon emissions can be reduced compared to fossil fuels. Using wood can not only mean more economical fuel bills, but in turn, sustains rural employment.
We only use good quality hardwood timber comprising mainly of hornbeam, oak, birch and ash, which is sourced locally from sustainable woodlands. We produce our logs all year, not just seasonally, so as a result our product is always available, fully dried and ready for you to burn. Buying and using damp firewood can result in more cost, as less heat is produced and the excess moisture in the wood can actually cause burner, stove, flue or chimney problems.
The logs are all cut to around 10” (25cm) length, which suits most stoves, fireplaces and chimneas. Once we have cut the timber into logs, it is then placed into our purpose built bags and moved into our kilns. Hot air is then forced through the kilns bringing the timber moisture content down to around 15%, freshly harvested wood contains a naturally high amount of water, between 50 - 75%, depending on species. The removal of this water with natural drying is known as seasoning which on average takes two years and will seldom reduce the moistire content to below 20%.
We supply 1m3 loads in tough breathable bags. These bags are custom made for us and are larger than the bags used by builders merchants which only hold .6 m3. We also have smaller 35ltr nets for ease of customer handling. The net bag size when empty and flat is 85cm x 50cm (2'10" x 1'8"). We can also deliver tipper loads of logs (approx 2½ cubic metres) we sell by volume. Our kiln processed logs are drier and therefore much lighter. For information purposes, one cubic metre of freshly felled unseasoned timber weighs approximately 500 kgs and approximately 300 kgs after being kiln dried.
Kindling available upon request.
